A testament to perseverance: Kala Harvey's story of survival
Its burgundy cover is battered, and handwritten notes fill the margins of its well-worn pages.

Yet Alma Harvey of Sledge has no plans to replace her beloved King James Bible.

Orthopedic Rehabilitation

The same expertise that makes Methodist Rehabilitation Center the best place to recover from a stroke, brain or spinal cord injury also makes MRC a first choice for those seeking treatment for a variety of orthopedic injuries and disorders.

Our Orthopedic Rehabilitation Program helps patients – from teenagers to adults – recover from multiple trauma, joint replacement surgery, musculoskeletal injury and femur fractures.

Our specialists have extensive experience providing the medical, nursing and therapy care necessary to help every patient maximize their abilities and maintain their independence.

Services are available through inpatient hospital stays, and follow-up treatment can be scheduled through our outpatient medical clinic and community-based therapy programs.

Methodist also plays a lead role in rehabilitation research—a definite advantage for our patients who often participate in scientific studies. The knowledge gained from that research is quickly applied to patient care.

That’s our model for driving innovation and excellence in our clinical programs, and you will not find a similar model for rehabilitation at any other hospital in Mississippi, and only at a few rehabilitation programs in the country.

Our Team

The Orthopedic Rehabilitation Team at Methodist Rehab is led by a physiatrist – a physician who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation and may also have further sub-specialty training in a specific area of rehabilitation medicine.

The team includes certified rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, respiratory therapists, therapeutic recreation specialists, vocational rehabilitation counselors, case managers, dieticians, neuropsychologists and biomedical/rehabilitation engineers. Communication is maintained, as needed, with the patient’s referring physician and, when necessary, other medical specialists are consulted.

Through regularly scheduled meetings and frequent interaction, the team works together to improve each patient’s strength, balance, mobility and endurance. The goal is to restore function, as well as teach strategies and prescribe assistive equipment to compensate for any deficits

Our Program

The Orthopedic Rehabilitation program at Methodist Rehab brings together medically accepted therapies, as well as newly recognized innovative treatments, to help patients achieve the highest level of recovery possible.

Patients benefit from a comprehensive treatment schedule that typically includes occupational, physical and recreational therapy, as well as educational sessions with the nursing staff.  Psychologists also are available to address cognitive, emotional or behavioral issues.

Family members are always welcome to be a part of the process and group support and educational opportunities are frequently offered to patients and caregivers alike.

Methodist Rehab also stays on the cutting edge of rehabilitation medicine and makes available a number of pioneering treatments.

Our nationally recognized spasticity management program helps patients gain relief from this often crippling condition through advanced medications and therapeutic intervention.

Our body-weight supporting treadmill system improves walking performance. And our Functional Electrical Stimulation bicycles and virtual reality gaming devices provide opportunities for therapeutic exercise.

Methodist Rehab also is home to an adaptive computing lab and advanced wheelchair seating clinic – both of which offer patients the latest assistive technology breakthroughs.

Most recently, we became the only hospital in a 300-mile radius to offer therapy through the ArmeoSpring device system. The computer-based technology helps restore arm function in people affected by arm paralysis and is being used for patient care and research at Methodist Rehab.
